Freshly published and arriving on our desks this month, “Materials Processing with Lasers” is published by Springer and available as a printed softcover book or as an e-book. This first English edition is the most up-to-date version of this textbook – there will be no further editions of the German book.
Aside from providing correct, meaningful translations of terms and expressions you may have first learnt in German, the English version opens the topic up to a vast international audience. It’s a testament to the wealth of deep and long-standing, but also cutting-edge knowledge concentrated at the Institut for Strahlwerkzeuge, part of the University of Stuttgart.
The IFSW celebrates its 40th anniversary this year. The institute’s idiosyncratic name harks back to an era when not everyone bet that “laser” would solidify its role in technological development. These days, we’re proud to say WE ARE STRAHLWERKZEUGE.
The IFSW’s review processes are renowned for their thoroughness and Prof. Graf has applied this to his own work. Beyond (or sometimes despite) the help of AI, the translation has taken him hundreds of hours – so he says, “enjoy reading it!”
