In a new DVS project (Deutscher Verband für Schweißen und verwandte Verfahren e. V.), the defect-free laser welding of copper rod conductors (hairpins) with adapted and optimized energy input is being investigated at the IFSW.

With the amended climate protection law on greenhouse neutrality, the German government has proclaimed the goal of greenhouse neutrality by 2045. Hairpins will be used in electric drives in the future to achieve a denser arrangement of conductors for greater efficiency and performance.

Defects such as pores and spatter during the joining process result in high scrap of the finished parts. The project therefore aims to develop the necessary understanding of the underlying causes in order to achieve zero-defect production.

The project is funded by the BMWK (Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action) based on a resolution of the German Bundestag through the Forschungsvereinigung Schweißen und Verwandte Verfahren e.V.
